Moving Day!

June 1, 2000

Angie and I just finished unloading the last few boxes! Our gorgeous new house needs a little love and attention but I think we can spice it up just in time for an end-of summer homecoming party.  I am happy to say that our new permanent address is 112 E. Cherry St. Olde Town East, Columbus Ohio.  I love the sound of that, E. Cherry Street- it sounds so welcoming and happy.  We haven’t met any of the neighbors yet but our really good friends Brad and Seth just bought a beautiful new home together one street over on E. Rich.  We did a quick drive through the neighborhood and there are quite a bit of rainbow flags flying high.  It makes be proud that we can bring some bright colors to the skies of Columbus.

We know at least 5 couples that have moved into the neighborhood over the last 6 months.  Everyone seems to really enjoy it.  I am most excited about our house being a work-in-progress.  I can’t wait to see it transform because of the work Angie and I put in together.  That’s the best part of this whole change- Angie and I are together and we are finally surrounding ourselves with people who care about us.  When we moved out of Toledo I felt like we could finally breath- we came here to find a place where we don’t have to dress the way other people want us to or suppress who we really are.  I have accepted who I am and Angie and I are finally at a place where we want to settle down and stop letting others dictate how and what we do.  We are finally home.  I just hope everything is as peaceful and as happy as I always imagined our first real home to be.

About Me

I chose a lens based on the film we viewed, Flag Wars.  The events and characters in the film were very powerful and inspiring to me. I wanted to create a blog that allowed me to embody an individual I imagine could have been present at the time of this film.  I chose to take on the role of a 25 year old gay woman, Carrie, who just moved into Old Towne East, Columbus with my partner of 5 years.  I wanted this project to be creative and give personal, yet fictional, accounts of what it would be like to have a neighborhood reject any lifestyle they might not agree with.  A lot of personal emotion and recollection was incorporated into this project because my family has dealt with discrimination, rejection and hatred for a family member being gay.  I wanted to incorporate information from videos and articles into this project to highlight the hardships that members of the gay community faced and are still facing.  I am arguing against the hatred and I show important historical moments that impact the gay community and our country.
